Call to Action - One-Way Conversion of Carey Street
If you have been following along with the proposed facility improvements that will extend the Division Street Bikeway to the Broadway bridge, there is an important update and opportunity to show your support.
At the center of discussion at Monday night's City Council Meeting(10/19) will be the proposed street configuration of Carey Street from two-way to one-way downhill – council approval is required for the change.
*The Division Bikeway Extension Project will not proceed if Carey Street remains two-way*
The proposed conversion addresses a tight right turn from southbound Carey Street onto northbound Division Street/Broadway Bridge and inadequate sight distance. The existing two-way configuration would complicate the planned two-way cycle-track extension.
Put City Policy into Practice
The proposed street configuration aligns with the City's adopted transportation policy, which states:
“We will never place the speed and convenience of cars above the safe movement of people.”
— Ann Arbor Comprehensive Transportation Plan, p. 153
This principle should guide decisions about how public streets are designed and operated. Streets must serve people walking, biking, rolling, taking transit and driving. When a change can improve safety and strengthen a critical connection, the City should be willing to reconsider existing street configurations.
Walk Bike Washtenaw supports this change and urges City Council to approve the one-way conversion.
This project has been placed on the October 19, 2026, City Council meeting agenda. Please consider submitting a public comment to Council.
